Hello there, or should I say good evening?
Today marks an important day for Christians… Ash Wednesday. If you’re following me on social media you might have seen my pancake post. Within the caption I stated that for the duration of lent, I would try and post a Bible study using the S.O.A.K method. I don’t intend for this to be preachy, or a way of converting people, instead I want to use it as a journey, a way of showing my thoughts, feelings and progress this Lent period. I hope you enjoy the next 40 days, let’s see where it will go!
Scripture: Matthew 6: 5 – 6 ”And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Observation: Sometimes, people may chose to openly show the works they are doing in the name of the Lord or even for themselves. If we apply this to the modern day, some people shout openly about the good deeds they have done in order to portray a better image of themselves, rather than doing such acts out of genuine love and sincere kindness.
Application: Within life it can be incredibly easy to brag or show off all of the good things we do. Although this may be the lesser of two evils, within this passage God is asking us to actively do these practises to strengthen our faith not for our own personal image benefit, but instead for him. I should look for ways to humble myself where possible, as within an image obsessed world, it is incredibly easy to get carried away rather than on focusing on the bigger picture and doing things out of love with the support of God.
Kneel in prayer: Dear Lord, during the lent period, help us to humble ourselves and to focus on the bigger picture. Help us not to moan, complain or act in a foolish manner, please give us the strength to be strong in order to grow closer to you during this time. Grant peace and wisdom to those whom may struggle during this period and may we focus our energies not on the negative but instead on you and your abundant love. In your name, Amen.
With love, Lottie.
